Heart Disease

Heart disease is a type of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Other types of cardiovascular disease include:

bulletCerebrovascular disease (stroke)
bulletHypertension (high blood pressure)
bulletHeart failure
bulletRheumatic heart disease

According to the World Health Organisation, the following measures can help prevent cardiovascular disease:

bulletConsume a diet high in fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains, and low in refined grains.
bulletAvoid trans fats - hard margarines, and any product containing "hydrogenated vegetable oil" or partially hydrogenated vegetable oil"
bulletAvoid excess saturated fats - animal fat and dairy fat
bulletIncrease consumption of omega-3 fatty acids from fish or plant sources
bulletAvoid excessively salty or sugary foods
bulletGet at least 30 minutes of regular physical activity on most days
bulletAvoid smoking
bulletMaintain a healthy weight
