Laois Local Sports Partnership
Laois LSP have a range of projects on offer, all of which are
designed to get young people active.
Sports Hall Athletics
This is an indoor athletics programme that runs from October to April
when the weather is usually too cold, wet and dark to do activities outside.
Together with FAS who provide coaches and Laois Trip (a rural transport
scheme) who provide transport, the LSP runs the programme in 2 locations in
6 week blocks. Children are collected from school and brought to a hall
where they are given an athletics class for 1 hour, after which they are
returned by bus to school. The class focuses on the basic of athletics (and
all sports), running, jumping, throwing. Activities include relay races,
hurdling, speed bounce, foam javelin, standing long jump, standing high
jump, target throws, balance beam and medicine balls.
Teenscene
This is a programme of activities for teenage girls, we offer them
activities such as dance, aerobics, kickboxing, yoga etc. The girls sign up
for 8 week blocks and can pick and choose what they wish to do. The LSP
organises tutors and the equipment where necessary, and the school/ youth
group organises the venue.
Like all other Local Sports Partnerships, Laois LSP offers programmes
such as Buntús Start (targeting pre-schools) and Buntús generic & sport
specific (primary schools) - details from ISC.
Sport For All
Laois Sports Partnership have developed an excellent booklet providing
guidelines to promote inclusion in sport/physical activity. The booklet
contains some excellent tips and is relevant for any sporting body.
The booklet was developed to try and broaden the knowledge level of
people in our community about the issue of disability and make people
comfortable when dealing with people with various forms of disabilities –
physical, intellectual, sensory, mental health or emotional/behavioural
difficulties. It has been developed for use by anyone involved in a sports
club - be they administrator, coach or player - for community groups and
facility owners.
People with disabilities also have the fear of entering an environment
where others may not understand their problems or how to address them
properly. Knowing that the community is more aware can help to increase
their confidence and willingness to integrate more fully in the community.
