Your Family and TV

Children spend long hours in front of the box. We all know this, right? OK, so what?

If you or your child watch 3 hours of TV per day, that equals:

bullet21 hours of TV each week
bulletThree and a half full days of TV watching each month
bulletNearly 46 full 24 hour days watching TV per year
bulletMany children spend more time watching TV than they spend in school (over the course of a year)
bulletIf your child lives to the age of 70, they will spend almost 9 years watching TV

Did you realise that TV watching is associated with poor health in children? Did you know that children who watch a lot of TV tend to do less well in school? Did you know that when younger children watch a lot of TV, their brain development may be affected? This part of the site will cover these health issues...but before you even think about health, think about this:

Our lives are ending, one second at a time...and what are we doing? Watching TV? We don't have a life any more, we just watch "life" on the TV. Hour after hour of reality TV and soap opera. Never mind health...there is more to life than TV.

OK, a bit of TV is no harm, but children often watch TV for long hours on their own.  Family conversation and interaction has been replaced by the telly. The TV is on constantly, sucking us in to hours of mindless tedium. Mindless zombies in suspended animation, passively absorbing "entertainment". No-one talking, eating meals in front of the box. Children watching TV in seperate rooms.  An alien from space would think that the TV was a God, and that we were paying homage at the televisual shrine each day.

Hopefully we have convinced you that this is something you need to think about. You can click here for more interesting TV facts, here for some links to TV related sites, and here for tips on helping you to reduce your family "screen-time".

When you are looking back in years to come, how would you like to remember these times? That you played catch with your kids, or that you watched "Eastenders"  while they watched "The OC" in another room? Think carefully about your answer. Maybe we should all stop watching and start living...after all, life doesn't give you a re-run.
